“Der Preis” is an exhibition that presents the art market as a form of gambling. Four artists jointly contribute starting capital from their own pockets; each work sold adds to a growing jackpot, and in the end, only one buyer wins the entire amount.
This setting creates an immediate metaphor for the economic reality of the art world: While buyers are guided by hopes of profit, the artists simultaneously bear the risk and put their own futures on the line.
Four distinct artistic practices come together in the exhibition.
Yaser Bashir focuses intensely in his paintings on the creation of surfaces that are both abstract and illusionistic, rendered with great attention to detail. Repetition plays a decisive role as a means of continuity throughout his creative process.
Fabian Beger raises open questions without pointing a moralizing finger at the audience. Multilayered and rich in associations, his work is aimed at eliciting a reaction from viewers. To a certain extent, it also contains the curiosity to redefine and push the boundaries of the very concept of art itself.
Leon Boden’s works engage with themes such as gender, sexuality, environmental and animal protection, as well as loss and illness, using the supposedly obscene as a means of visualizing complex content. His detailed, multilayered compositions invite interpretation and self-reflection.
Roman Toulany explores the interplay of identity, banality, and hope in his works. As a practicing screenwriter and film director, he transfers painterly creations into narrative film, and vice versa.
“Der Preis” makes clear that artistic work exists beyond a clearly defined concept of wages, and that the very advance investment made by artists becomes their most valuable, but also riskiest, resource. In a spectacular finale featuring a jackpot draw and live acts with showmaster Fabian Beger, uncertainty finally takes center stage: Who will win it all? And what about the artists?
