facade in the dark of Hotel Marinade

The Hotel Mariandl / Cafe am Beethovenplatz in the Isarvorstadt district has a reputation as a meeting place for artists. Artists, writers, musicians, architects, students and professors are regular guests here. There are no flat-screen TVs, carpeted floors or a lift in the listed Belle Époque hotel. There is not even a lobby in the usual sense. The reception is also the bar of the café. Once you have picked up your room key there, you climb the original and somewhat well-worn oak stairs. There you will discover lots of antiques, parquet floors that are over a hundred years old, lots of marble, stucco ceilings and crystal chandeliers.

Each room has its own original furnishings and no two are the same. So everything is a little different from modern hotels. Since 2000, the now legendary ‘Zimmer frei’ artists’ project organised by the Munich Department of Culture in cooperation with the Hotel Mariandl/Café am Beethovenplatz has been held in these historic rooms every year. While hotel operations continue as normal on the other floors, the first and second floors are filled with art. Not only the hotel rooms, but also the stairwell and other exciting niches will be filled with art. The participating artists are international and occupy the rooms with their installations, photographs, videos, paintings and performances.

This artist project ZIMMER FREI promotes artists who are still at the beginning of their professional careers.

Every year in October – after the Oktoberfest – the artist project ZIMMER FREI takes place for one week. On two floors of the hotel, 12 artists from Munich occupy the hotel rooms, deal with the spatial situation and create situational works of art.
This project is funded by the city and has been realised in cooperation with the Munich Department of Culture since 2000. A catalogue was published in 2018 to mark the project’s anniversary and is available at the hotel.
