Art needs spaces…
Exactly 20 years ago, we therefore asked ourselves whether the KUNSTARKADEN might not be suitable as an art space. Despite many obstacles, such as the dilapidated condition of the rooms and a lack of infrastructure, the Kunstarkaden quickly established itself as an integral part of the Munich art scene and will remain an indispensable place for artists and visitors in the future.
As a forum for artistic experiments, as a platform for contemporary art, as a place for dialogically conceived projects, the Kunstarkaden promote young artists living in Munich from different cultural backgrounds who are still at the beginning of their professional careers in group exhibitions. We particularly appreciate the fact that each exhibition is accompanied by a publication – in the form of a catalog, booklet or memoir. Six group exhibitions are held here each year, sometimes consisting of two artists, sometimes up to 10.
The works are presented and experienced in interaction with the spatial conditions of the Kunstarkaden. The aim is to incorporate these into the art. Each time we set ourselves the goal of creating new worlds of experience. Visitors to the Kunstarkaden should also be assigned an individual role. They are both part of and witness to the spatial experience.
The Kunstarkaden are not a classic gallery in the conventional sense, not a “white cube”. Here, the interaction with the architecture plays an important role; it is an environment in which the works of art can and should enter into a dialog with their surroundings. The vision of the Kunstarkaden is to be a platform for young contemporary art that invites artistic experimentation, away from strict guidelines and directives.
